A Tale of Necromancy and Ambition
Seeing as I have now graduated from the “esteemed” Mage Tower (The arcane institution of Rustock, ruled by inept mages), I suppose I should keep a journal of my endeavors. They have assigned me to be a mage detective of sorts. Probably due to my superior intellect and interest in the macabre. I have to answer to High Mage Anton. This man is a borderline idiot. He should have been a warrior where his brains are not needed, alas his fat and age remove that possibility as well. This city is interesting though. The humans and their dwarven pets have laid claim to it, but something of this size so near to where the forest home of my kin was decimated by the vile Orlean must have been built by our kind. This is only speculation at the moment, but humans don’t have this kind of foresight and dwarves this attention to detail.
Midtowne suits my needs for now but I should be in HighTowne. Unfortunately… I am being sent to Lowtowne to investigate a plebeian human’s attempt to bypass the walls that keep the vermin away. I am being sent to the Temple of St Cuthbert (A temple wasting resources on the unworthy) to witness the trial of this latest foray into “magic” to access midtowne. I don’t see the benefit of these temples. They waste so much money and time helping those nature has selected to be removed. I wonder if their makeshift clinics could prove useful for studying the art of necromancy. Maybe volunteer to help and test some spells. Could maybe even bribe these mongrels with a pittance of gold to let me have ownership of their bodies when they die. We’ll see…
The trial was so much ritual and not enough facts. The man is an idiot, I’m going to recommend his death I think. He said he bought a book from a merchant named Orrin that helped him. I will visit his house and find this spellbook for myself. May have something to do with these “purple dragon” vagabonds.
Went to the house, nearly killed his wife but she gave me the spellbook. There is a name inside, Delton (A mysterious name linked to the spellbook).
Searched the LowTowne bars for this Delton. No luck.
I met a group while investigating this crime. They seem harmless but more interesting than what I’m doing. There is a minor rogue who is far less sneaky than he thinks he is, a hothead warrior who will be a good patsy later on, a highly annoying bard (I hate bards so much), a wizard not from the tower I assume he is one of the Prime Order as he is not a dirty bum yet., that simpleton Clayton (A weak-willed mage and momma’s boy) is here too. The hothead is his brother, makes sense. Clayton barely made it through the academy and acts like he’s a rogue too, waste of time. I did not know how much of a momma’s boy Clayton is during school. Yikes. There is another warrior but I will avoid him as much as I can for now, he is intense. Oh yeah, the loudmouth. There is a midtowne brat who, while decent with a sword, thinks he is a gift from above to everyone. His dad is a very minor player in midtowne.
The wizard wanted me to get a meeting for him in the Tower. I did, but I told High Mage Anton that he wizard is an idiot and not trustworthy.
There was an “incident” tonight. I can’t describe the rush. I was overly nervous after my attempt to creep in the criminal’s house was busted by his wife. I was on the way back to the tower when it happened. He was old and will be hardly missed. Plus he deserved it being out that late and surprising me. But I enjoyed it. I can’t stop thinking about his face. The life draining from it. Having power over someone like this is…addictive. To also know that it was these spells that people are so resistant to use that can end someone so easily even at my novice beginnings is validating.
I need to do it again. This time with purpose. Not an accident of shock and timing. I need a plan.
It happened again.
I executed the plan to perfection. I went near that vile Cuthbert temple and found a drunk in the shadows.
I used Chill Touch and killed him, cast Parching Touch to make him seem drained of blood. My new friend Asmodeus (My viper familiar, aiding my deceptions) was kind enough to give him a bite on the neck. The final touch was a minor cantrip to leave the smell of garlic around the body. Lets see how the idiots take this.
HAHAHA They really believe vampires are around. Even this group I’m with hasn’t connected any dots. They SAW me remove a finger from those goblins we fought. I needed a souvenir from this man as well. Plus… garlic keeps vampires away according to lore it isn’t left behind. How dumb and easily fooled are humans?
THIS GUY WON’T STOP WHINING ABOUT HIS MOM.
I will deal with this.
We met a ranger. Not so bad, hates the city and most people. Good for him.
So… I did something. Something great.
On the Day of the Dead, the entire group was wrapped up with some silly gang war. The Klays showed where their home is. I saw my chance. While they were out preparing to ambush said gang, I slipped into their house and followed the same steps to slay their mother and hopefully shut Clayton up. She got lucky and sliced my arm, Clayton noticed I was bleeding after we climbed up onto a roof when I joined them. Nearly got caught but he’s gullible. They think it’s a vampire. Well, apparently their older brother thinks some criminal element she was associated with did it. Good. Look everywhere else. Maybe now Clayton won’t be held back.
I just got assigned to investigate MY OWN CRIMES by Anton. How elegantly aligned is this? The powers that be WANT me to kill. They want me to get away with it.
I met a strange Elf today. Ansennig (A druid with a hatred for Rustock’s urban sprawl). He appears to be a Druid. Also, curse myself for being around humans too much. How did I forget sleep wouldn’t work on another Elf. It’s inherent to me.
He apparently hates the City.
I am tired of Aurelio (A loudmouth warrior from Midtowne) and Daemon (A cunning rogue aiding the unworthy) talking about MidTowne and this spoilt brat trying to sneak people in that are chose to have a station below that. So, I wrote an official letter from the Tower to the Town Guards reporting them.
The large rock formation in LowTowne spoke to me today.
No…It beckoned to me. It spoke of its dagger. To plunge its dagger into the heart of anyone I wanted. It is awake.
I killed another. A bard. Ha. He was sitting on a well near the gate to MidTowne, just under the watchful eyes of the Tower.
I’m getting good.
One more. A female guard. Near that nasty inn we have meetings at. She tried to put up a fight. The FEAR in her eyes was like sugar.
My last for now.
I had my friend Asmodeus trail that rogue Daemon and find out where he lives. I killed another man near his house. I want them to know that they are close to the danger. They are helping me grow! They are unwitting idiots helping me attain my goals.
LowTowne is rife with Vampire rumors. This is fantastic.
I went to LowTowne and MidTowne and bought all of the actually credible books on vampires and their lore. I am keeping these away from the party so they won’t know it isn’t a vampire. Always two steps ahead…
Ansennig has declared war on LowTowne. He was asking farmers and merchants where all of their food comes from. I expect he will start attacking it soon.
I think I will help him help me.
I was sent to help a supposedly crazy man. Turns out he was in possession of a painting that will tell the future. It shows you the future based on your alignment. I saw LowTowne attacking MidTowne and Orvig warriors carrying off Rustock people in chains. I also saw an older version of our little group bloody and returning from an adventure with some spoils. Including that new guy we met, Wendell (A healer who won’t save them from me). He’s just a healer. Handy but he won’t help them when I come for them all.
We helped a noble find his family. A minor noble. But…he wants us to work directly for him. That’s quaint.
I was contacted by a real noble regarding the vampire investigation, Tresnik Bettinger (A noble who cares too much for Rustock). Maybe I could be his House’s Mage until I gain enough wealth and power for myself. I have to be careful. He seemingly cares about the city.
I’ve been having dreams of late. I think they’re connected to the Stone.
It’s dark and red, I have seen letters.
V, E, C, and N so far
Immortality is not a gift. It is an ACHIEVEMENT!
I’ve been collecting fingers from the dead. My dead. I have a new goal. Master Necromancy as it is obviously unrivaled in it’s power over life and death.
Eventually become a lich. No… Become THE Lich.
Deyja. That will be my name when the time is right. People will hold me in the same reverence as Vecna (The god of secrets and undeath), Orkus, or Acererak.
The fingers are part of my plan. I will craft for myself a crown of undeath. Undead fingers of my living victims.
Writhing in all their glory. With some of them holding the power to cast spells.
THE DIADEM OF DEYJA
It WILL happen
It WILL be MINE
It WILL BE ME
I went to Aurelio’s wedding at St Cuthbert. I was debating on whether I should kill his fiancé or not. She lives for now.
I got a little inebriated and cast a minor summon undead spell. It doesn’t last long, fairly harmless. The priests killed it immediately and cast me out. That was it. I’m tired of these “goodly” gods. I will find my own.
The answer is obvious, the last dream was an A. Vecna.
I am a worshiper of Vecna now. Until I am powerful enough to forge my own way as a Lich.
I’m going to buy the abandoned house near the Searching Stone (A mysterious rock that speaks of daggers) as I have taken to call it. I forgot to mention, there was another gang war and a gang owned this house. It’s partially burnt. There was also an incident with cultists summoned by the Stone to attack townsfolk. It was inspiring. I will excavate below the Stone and build a temple to Vecna. I will start a cult of Vecna in the city. To counter the zealots of Cuthbert, Pelor, and now… Heironeous Paladins? KILL THEM ALL
We fought some bandits. I drained one and had my viper bite him and none of my party realized these were the signs of a “vampire” attack. I pulled it off right in front of them. Maybe the church will realize it, but who knows, they are idiots too.
HE CAME TO ME.
He called to me and summoned me to the Elf section of the city. There was an elven maiden he required me to kill. I did so gleefully. Vecna, in his undying wisdom, has told me about a cave full of undead outside of the city that contains a phylactery that I need to be a lich, then I’ll hide it where they’ll never look in the woods or something. (I even had the healer heal the hand I cut to put blood on the phylactery).
He also gave me a vial that I am to drink when I am ready to die and become a lich.
It is happening!!
The best part is the group is going to help me become a lich and they have no idea.. Luckily, the first time I resurrect will be nearly instant. It’s all within my grasp. Lex Vecna!
